Urgent – Update on “Medical” Marijuana Bill (SB46) and Gambling Bill (SB319)

MARIJUANA

The “medical” marijuana bill (SB46) passed both the House and the Senate and is now on Governor Ivey’s desk for her to sign or veto. Please call Governor Ivey’s office TODAY and ask her to veto SB46. The House and Senate may override her veto, but there is a chance they would not. It would also be good to contact your House member and state Senator and ask him/her not to override a possible veto on SB46. GAMBLING On Monday, May 17, the Alabama House and Senate will convene for the last legislative day. It is possible that the House will revisit SB319 (the comprehensive gambling bill that includes a lottery, casino gambling, a compact with the Poarch Creek Indians expanding their gambling operations, sports betting and online gambling). If they are able to work out a compromise with all of the different gambling interests, they could decide to try one last time to pass this terrible bill. We are hoping several House members will filibuster the bill until the clock runs out on this 2021 Legislative Session, but we need to let all of the House members know that we are watching and opposed to any gambling expansion bill(s). Please contact your House member TODAY and ask him/her to oppose SB319. We believe it is possible to change a self-destructive youth culture, but we need you.
